litfilms 2020 - Artists in residence begin their work
The first edition of litfilms – Literatur Film Festival Münster takes further shape. A central element of the festival is the three-month residency of both a filmmaker as well as a writer. They will join their creative forces and work together in Münster and the surrounding area. Sandra Reyes, Colombian filmmaker, and German writer Thomas Empl have been selected as this year’s artists in residence. Both have arrived now and are hosted by Kloster Bentlage in Rheine for the first part of their residency.
Kloster Bentlage, now a cultural center, is the ideal place to start for Reyes and Empl. For almost 600 years, the estate was used as a monastery and noble’s residence, and it is of great historic significance for the Münsterland. The natural surroundings of the monastery, including the nearby river Ems and the Salinenpark, offer more than enough space and sensory impressions for the residents’ creative work. “We have been given a warm welcome and I am looking forward to this collaboration”, Thomas Empl emphasizes. The location of Kloster Bentlage fascinates Sandra Reyes: “It is such a beautiful place and I think it is great for any kind of inspiration.” Both residents are full of energy and curious about the work that will result from the upcoming weeks and months.

Both residents are supplied with accommodation, alimentation and technical equipment. Reyes and Empl are asked to enter into an artistic dialogue on the subject “intermediate spaces” – with each other and themselves, with the surrounding area, with country and city. After spending four weeks at rurally located Kloster Bentlage, they will move on to Münster and discover the city. They will research and create their own works, continually touching the border between text and film. Additionally, they will curate one or another item on the program. The results will be presented to a larger audience in autumn, as part of litfilms – Literatur Film Festival Münster.
Sandra Reyes, born in 1989 in Bogotá, Colombia, is a filmmaker who graduated from the Bauhaus-Universität in Weimar with a Master of Arts. She still lives in Weimar. Thomas Empl, born in 1991 in Munich, lives and works in Cologne. He studied Medial Arts focusing on Literary Writing at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne.
litfilms – Literatur Film Festival Münster will take place from September 16th to October 11th 2020 in Münster and the surrounding area. The festival is hosted by Filmwerkstatt Münster and supported by Kunststiftung NRW, the Department for Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia and the City of Münster.
