Nightwatch – The Film Festival’s Dark Side

Published on

Dark, shocking, scary, disturbing – the late-night section’s diverse mixture of new horror films and thrillers is not for the faint-hearted. With its “Nightwatch” series, the 17th edition of Filmfestival Münster offers a sample of the genre’s facets and bloody colours at a late hour.

Three newcomers to the genre splatter the screen with fresh blood by presenting their debut shockers: A dramatic accident changes the lives of teenagers Zach and Josh in Kevin Phillips “Super Dark Times”, a subtle coming-of-age nightmare with nostalgic 1990s charm. The dark version of “Stand By Me” competed at the Fantasy Film Festival and received the Narcisse-Award for best film at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival (Wed, Oct 4th, 10:00 pm).

In “Hounds of Love”, Australian Ben Young makes callous serial killer couple White meet a 17-year-old girl exercised in psychological tricks, who drives a wedge between them. Young’s intense character study of the two serial killers is brutal, and the audience is hit between the eyes by its realism and normality (Thu, Oct 5th, 10:15 pm).

In “Raw” by Julia Ducournau, shy vegetarian Justine acquires the taste for it, when she is forced to eat raw rabbit liver during the fraternity pledging at the college for veterinary medicine. A disturbing and at the same time moving cannibal drama from France, which intelligently combines the real horrors of coming of age with the genre of cannibal films. “Raw” was screened in Cannes in 2016 and received the FIPRESCI critics’ choice award (Fri, Oct 6th, 11:00 pm).

Spanish horror specialist Paco Plaza, who has won fame for his [REC]-trilogy, proves once more with his scary ghost thriller “Verónica” that he knows his craft horrifically well. Skillfully, he uses classic jump scares, when 15-year-old Verónica tries to save her siblings from the demons she has invoked (Sat, Oct 10th, 10:30 pm).

The 17th edition of Filmfestival Münster offers once again carefully selected cineastic new discoveries, made for shock-enthusiasts.
